- Van Ruisdael was one of the most famous landscape painters in seventeenth-century Holland, and the foremost exponent of the classical phase in the Dutch landscape tradition. This picture is a late work by the artist. Its unusual silvery tonality delicately suggests the effects of the sun’s rays illuminating a shepherd and his flock.
