  • The painting is a typical example of Greuze's later production of 'expressive' heads that were produced in increasing numbers in his workshop from the time of the Revolution. The work was exhibited by Greuze at the Salon of 1800 and sold by him in 1802 to Joseph Wilkinson for 4,800 livres. The English landscape painter John Constable (1776–1837) copied it in 1831 in a work now in private hands. It is likely that Constance Mayer (1775–1821), who trained with Greuze as his student and who is represented in the Wallace Collection by her large allegory of the Sleep of Venus (P348), knew this work personally since she produced her own version of this composition.
