  • In 1609, Rubens became Court Painter to the Spanish governors of the Netherlands, the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. From this time until 1622 he received many commissions for churches in Brussels and Antwerp, part of the substantial programme of church building and restoration undertaken during the 12-year truce in the war between Spain and the Netherlands, 1609-21. More intimate in scale than the other treatment of the subject by Rubens in the Wallace Collection (P519), this painting is the modello (sketch shown to a patron for approval of the composition) for the altarpiece painted by Rubens for the convent of the Dames Blanches, Louvain, now in King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. The picture was commissioned by the prioress, Anna van Zevendonck, and paid for in 1634.
