  • Possibly painted in the 1850s, as suggested by Ingamells. There was a ready market in early and mid-nineteenth century France for small-scale exotic scenes featuring odalisques (cf. Bonington, 'Odalisque in Red', P734 and Decamps, 'An Odalisque', P666). The composition, with the beautiful girl looking into a mirror, recalls traditional representations of Vanity.
