- The Polish hat is known as a czapka. In 1807 Napoleon reconstituted in Poland with the remains of his former Polish Legion a new body of men known as the légion de la Vistule after their move to France in 1808. After the Napoleonic wars there was a sustained interest in France in Poland (see Cogniet, 'The Polish Standard Bearer, P681, and 'The Polish Officer: Praga 1831', P685).
