- An early work, related to Vernet’s oil painting 'Soldier of Waterloo' of 1818 (Pasadena, California, Norton Simon Museum), formerly in the Orléans collection, which shows a wounded soldier resting in despair on a burial mound the day after the battle (see also Bellangé, 'Waterloo', P748). The fate of French soldiers after the defeat of Napoleon was a matter of great concern to Vernet and many of his fellow Bonapartists (see Vernet, 'Peace and War', P598).
