  • The potter Bernard Palissy (1510(?)-90), a fervent Protestant who died in the Bastille, was one of the heroes of Romantic iconography. He was also depicted by Delaroche among the artists in his mural the 'Hemicycle' in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Here he is shown inspired by the light from his kiln. Formerly catalogued as 'The Alchemist'.
