  • The intricacy of miniature boxwood carvings made in the Netherlands has always been a source of wonder. Intended for personal devotion, they quickly became desirable collectors' items.

    This miniature Gothic triptych (altarpiece made up of three panels) is richly carved with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, with the Adoration of the Magi in the centre. A kneeling couple in the panels on the far left and right probably depicts those who commissioned the piece. Their identity remains unknown, although the man is accompanied by St Nicholas which may be a clue that his name was Nicholas
