  • The incredible intricacy of miniature boxwood carvings made in the Netherlands has always been a source of wonder. Intended for personal devotion, they quickly became desirable collectors' items.

This miniature Gothic altarpiece is richly carved with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, with the Adoration of the Magi in the centre. We do not know who commissioned the piece, but a kneeling man accompanied by Saint Nicholas in the panel on the far left may be a clue that his name was Nicholas.
