Born in Dresden, he came to England in 1704 and learned the art of portrait painting in enamel from Charles Boit, the leading practitioner of the technique. By 1726 Vertue recorded that ‘for some years he has had more persons of distinction daily sitting to him than any Painter living’. His eyesight began to give trouble as early 1725, and he had more or less retired twenty years before his death.
