Biography
Works of Art

Born in Rotterdam, the son of a notary, he was the pupil of Jan Simonsz Torrentius (1589-1644) in Haarlem. By 1625 he was back in Rotterdam, living with his brother Jacob, another notary, for whom he acted regularly as a witness until 1671. His surviving works are almost all peasant genre scenes, related in style to the works of Rotterdam low-life genre painters such as Cornelis and Herman Saftleven, Hendrik Sorgh and Pieter de Bloot.

He is also recorded as a portrait painter and there is a signed Lot and his Daughters in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam. He was buried in Rotterdam on 27 September 1677. A number of his works have previously been attributed to Pieter van Slingeland.
