- Sword, the blued hilt made up of a faceted, bun-shaped pommel; oval, cord-bound grip; diagonally re-curved crossguard, of diamond section, with pyramidal knobs; two side-rings of flat triangular section, hilt arms and transverse bars at the back; stiff tapering blade of diamond section, grooved at the forte and stamped with a maker's mark on either side; tapering ricasso stamped with a slightly larger cross on each side.
Norman and Barne, 1980, p. 112, pI. 1. The riband-like shape, and the side-rings with cusped centres, resemble the Saxon type of hilt, cf. A506. A similar hilt is depicted in a portrait of an unknown young man about 1548-53, attributed to Francesco Salviati, in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (no. 58.14).
