- According to the thirteenth-century Golden Legend, the Virgin Mary was borne up to Heaven by angels three days after her death. She was ‘assumed’ to Heaven, while Christ ascended directly. Although the legend declared that Mary was sixty (or seventy two) years old, she is generally portrayed as ageless. In mid-air, supported by a choir of angels, she stretches out her arms as she gazes up in rapture.
This painting was bought as a Murillo, but has since been re-attributed to his pupil Francisco Meneses Osorio. He is best known for completing the paintings for the Capuchin Church in Cádiz left incomplete by Murillo on his death in 1682. A preparatory drawing for this composition is in the Courtauld Gallery, London. It was bought by the 4th Marquess of Hertford probably in 1848.
