  • The portrait of Charles I, P112, is twinned not with a matching state portrait of the Queen, but with a portrait of a different type showing Henrietta Maria in a blue dress. It is unusual in that it depicts the Queen in the imaginary costume of ‘Careless Romance’ which Van Dyck invented for his female sitters in England: he portrayed Anne Crofts, Countess of Cleveland, wearing the same dress (private collection). The picture’s handling indicates that it was painted by the same copyist who executed the pendant of Charles I. The copyist probably decided to depict the Queen more informally than her husband in order to provide an image in keeping with the eighteenth-century romantic view of the Caroline court.
