  • The picture was copied after one now in the Royal Collection, painted c.1630-2, which was clearly inspired by Titian’s Madonna and Child with Saints Stephen, Jerome and Maurice (c.1520; Paris, Louvre), which Van Dyck drew in part in his Italian sketchbook. Van Dyck’s composition proved a popular one, and a number of copies are known, including paintings at Ugbrooke, Charlecote and in the collection of Lord Harrington. The Wallace Collection’s picture was attributed to Van Dyck at the sale of Cardinal Fesch when purchased for the 4th Marquess of Hertford.
