  • The lady is seated in front of a relief decorated with swags and putti. Beside her is an orange tree, and in her hand she holds one of its fruit. Both tree and fruit may refer to the House of Orange-Nassau, although the orange tree was also generally regarded as a symbol of purity, chastity and generosity, all desirable attributes for a well-bred lady (cf. Boucher P418).
