  • Van Ostade studied with Frans Hals in his native Haarlem. His fellow student, the Flemish painter Adriaen Brouwer, would also have a profound impact on him, both in terms of style and low-life subject matter. Throughout his career he also provided figures for other artists, including Jacob van Ruisdael and Pieter Saenraedam. He was the most important Dutch draughtsman and etcher of genre subjects of his day, and his pupils included his brother Isaack and Jan Steen. In Interior with Peasants, the mother attempting to feed her child probably recalls the seventeenth-century Dutch proverb ‘Open wide when someone offers you pap, or else later you will receive nothing.’ Ostade was a sensitive observer of mother and child relationships, and appears to have been the first contemporary artist to explore this theme, common in Dutch genre painting.
