  • Thought to be by Jacob van Ruisdael and Adriaen van de Velde when in the collection of Paul I of Russia in the eighteenth century, this traditional attribution was only challenged in the twentieth century. The monogram and handling suggest an attribution to Ruisdael’s lesser-known follower, Rombouts. The treatment of the trees is comparable to Rombouts’s Cottage among Trees near a Pool (Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen) and the Hobbema-like cottage recurs in a signed Rombouts, The Cottages (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).
