  • Potter’s rural subjects reflect the importance of agriculture in the seventeenth-century Dutch economy. While describing farm workers and their animals with great care, Potter adopts a low viewpoint, creating a broad expanse of sky in which the gathering gloom of a storm is suggested. The picture once belonged to the banker William Hope, at whose London sale in 1849 it was bought by the 4th Marquess of Hertford, who returned the picture to the auctioneer. He changed his mind less than ten years later and re-purchased the painting, paying 20,100 Francs (about £804) at the 1858 Hope sale in Paris.
