  • The Hapsburg Emperor, Charles V (1500-58), became both King of Spain (1516-56) and Holy Roman Emperor (1519-58: cf. Robert-Fleury P361). He resided principally in Brussels and his enlightened patronage made his court one of the most cultivated in Europe. The present work is one of numerous copies of a lost portrait, painted c.1525-30 and generally attributed to Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen.
