  • Perhaps the painting, 'Peasants of the Valley of Ossau', exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1847. Ossau and Pau (where, according to the inscription, the picture was painted) are both in the Basse-Pyrénées in the province of Béarn. The image of a man leading a woman and child on a donkey inevitably evokes the traditional subject of 'The Flight into Egypt'. A watercolour version (also of 1846) was sold at Sotheby’s, London, 11 June 1997.
