- An adaptation, with variations, of a Reni composition, known from an engraving of 1786 by François Guibert and formerly in the collection of the Regent, Philippe, duc d’Orléans. Reni’s works were highly prized in seventeenth and eighteenth century France for their grace and heightened emotion and were much copied, while the following century Stendhal concluded that Reni must have possessed a French soul. The sweetened domesticity of the present picture may indicate that it was copied in France at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
