- Lyon, the birthplace of Saint-Jean, had a major school of flower and still-life painting in the nineteenth century. Saint-Jean won a European reputation for his flower pieces, scrupulously painted in season and from nature. The arrangement in this picture includes poppies, roses and grapes. The picture was commissioned through the dealer Laneuville by the 4th Marquess of Hertford as a companion piece for Saint-Jean, 'Flowers and Grapes', P761. In a letter to Lord Hertford Saint-Jean explained: 'I have taken time over it, hoping that you would understand both how long this style of painting takes and how necessary it is to wait for the right season. I have painted it all from life. An important change in the centre of this picture obliterated almost the whole of last year's work...'
