- Lion masks are one of the most common motifs in Renaissance armour of the heroic style, symbolising nobility, power and ferocity. This pauldron is a good example of how the motif was used not just on helmets but also to decorate the shoulders of heroic armours. It was not unusual for the knees and elbows to be decorated in the same way.
The eyes of this piece appear to have been cut-out at a later date, perhaps to convert it into a face-mask.
