  • A boat on the right flies Dutch flags and in the centre mid-distance is a pont, a flat-bottomed ferry. The painting probably depicts a scene on the Maas, with the landing stage of Papendrecht from which the ferry ran to Dordrecht. Although the surface is now somewhat worn, the luminous atmospheric morning effects and shimmering highlights on the water are particularly fine. Cuyp’s command of such tonal gradations was unrivalled in Dutch landscape and the picture has been called one of the classic paintings of Cuyp’s early maturity.
