  • The miniature is inspired by Greuze's depictions of a single female subject in the guise of a bacchante. A label formerly with the miniature is inscribed in ink 'Ecrin miniature/Portrait Mme. Cail en Bacchante/ par Sicardi.' The miniature was attributed to Marie-Louis Sicardi (1746-1825) at the Allègre sale of 1872 (Paris) where it was acquired by Sir Richard Wallace for 1,500 francs.
