- Isabella Waerbeke was the wife of the animal painter Paul de Vos and the couple were prominent members of the artistic community in Antwerp in the seventeenth century. Paul’s brother was the portraitist Cornelis De Vos. Rubens acted as godfather to Paul and Isabella’s son, Peter Paul. Van Dyck was also a friend of the family; he painted this portrait of Isabella Waerbeke in c.1628. Originally, the picture had as its companion a portrait of the sitter’s husband. The pictures hung together in a ground-floor room of De Vos’ house in Antwerp and were left to their son, Peter Paul, in 1675. Both pictures were bought by the 3rd Marquess of Hertford at the Hope sale of 1816, for 100 guineas. Lord Hertford subsequently sold the portrait of Paul de Vos, which was later destroyed in a fire at the Laeken Palace, Brussels, in 1890-1.
