  • There is no evidence to support the inscription identifying the sitter as the duc d’Alençon (1554-84), younger brother of Charles IX and Henri III of France, and no other clue to his identity is given. He wears Spanish dress, fashionable with the nobility in the southern Netherlands during the turbulent period of Spanish rule and Protestant revolt. The picture is typical of the 3rd Marquess of Hertford’s taste for historical portraits.
