  • The sitter has been identified as Sally Siddons (1775-1803), elder daughter of the tragic actress Mrs Siddons. In 1797 Lawrence was engaged to Sally but briefly fell in love with her sister Maria and eventually alienated them both. However, the identification was rejected by Ingamells, and, though it has recently been revived by Garlick (see Literature), it remains problematic in the absence of further evidence.
