  • Dated c.1795-1800 by Garlick (see Literature). He suggests that an identification of the sitter as Mrs John Angerstein (1777-1848), wife of an M.P. and daughter-in-law of the financier and collector John Julius Angerstein (1735-1823), is plausible. The 4th Marquess of Hertford hung this picture, as a Reynolds, beside his bed in his apartment on the rue Laffitte in Paris, with Greuze’s 'Portrait of a Lady' (P403) as its pendant.
