  • The contrast between the back-lit trees on the right of this picture and the open sunny vista on the left is typical of Hobbema’s mature woodland views. The left half of the composition also features an unidentified ruin, which recurs in several of Hobbema’s paintings. The 4th Marquess of Hertford bought this painting for the considerable sum of 98,000 francs (about £3,920) at the sale of Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato, in Paris in 1868.
