- Meindert Hobbema trained with Jacob van Ruisdael before 1660, and later developed light, decorative landscapes. Dateable c.1663, the treatment of the woodland vista on the left, with its lush back-lit trees and sandy road, recalls the work of Ruisdael. The dyke, elevated road, and glimpse of agricultural land beyond, demonstrate that by this date, Hobbema had begun to vary and elaborate his compositions in original ways. The new motifs invariably celebrate man’s triumphant reorganisation of his landscape. The dyke, for example, recalls the enormous effort that went into drainage and land reclamation in the period. The beauty of the picture, however, resides in its fresh, vivid colouring, luminous light effects and fluid brushwork.
