- The handling of the landscape compares with that of A Wooded Landscape (see P95), suggesting a similar date: c.1663. Watermills were a favourite theme with Hobbema; over thirty pictures with this motif are known. The mill in this picture is of a type found in the eastern province of Gelderland flanking the German border. Ruisdael sketched such a mill on his travels in the area in the 1650s and, although similar drawings by Hobbema are known, it is not clear whether they are from life or after Ruisdael. Comparable versions of this picture are in the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. This picture attracted much notice at the Willem II of Holland sale in 1850, where a fierce battle for its possession took place between the Tsar of Russia, the King of Belgium and the 4th Marquess of Hertford.
