- Born in Alkmaar in 1621, Allart van Everdingen travelled to Norway and Sweden in 1644, returning to settle in the Netherlands in 1645. His earliest known Scandinavian landscape dates from 1646, and he thereafter established himself as a painter of Nordic scenery. This picture is in the artist’s late style, characterized by expansive brushwork and a light palette.
