  • The painting is based on similar Dutch genre scenes that explore similar light effects in domestic scenes. Within the seventeenth-century Dutch template, Raoux modernises the scene. The woman is dressed in contemporary fashion holding a French mirror. The vibrant colours reveal Raoux's interest in Venetian painting, dating back to his extended stay in Venice from at least 1708 to 1713. Raoux combined the daylight from the left with its reflection from the mirror, producing a complicated combination of light effects. At least six different compositions of the subject by Raoux are known, testimony to the success of this idea.
