  • Comparable to other works by the artist dating from the 1790s, this picture demonstrates Van Dongen’s reliance on the stylistic models of the seventeenth-century masters Potter and Cuyp (cf. Potter, 'The Milkmaid', P219, and Cuyp, 'The Avenue at Meerdervoort', P51). It is one of countless late eighteenth and nineteenth-century paintings evoking the art of the seventeenth century - popular because of its decorative qualities and often, for painters from the Low Countries, for its nationalist appeal.
