  • Venus and Cupid is characteristic of the painter’s late, meticulous style, with exaggeratedly slender nude figures. Venus warns Cupid not to fire his arrows thoughtlessly, and extends a finger at him to further emphasise her point. The work is typical of Van der Werff’s small-scale lightly erotic subjects which he painted for the open market towards the end of his career.
