  • Van der Neer began to paint nocturnes c.1645-50, though the rather cursory handling of this work suggests a later date. The scene is constructed in Van der Neer’s habitual manner, with a central river reaching into the distance and the creation of perspectival recession into depth. Picturesque interest is established by the fishermen hauling their nets in the foreground.
