- Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife recalls the story of the Hebrew Joseph, who was propositioned by the wife of his master Potiphar, captain of the Egyptian Pharaoh’s guard. When they were alone, she clutched at his robes, pleading him to make love to her, but Joseph fled, leaving his cloak in her hands. She avenged this humiliation by accusing Joseph of trying to rape her, using his cloak as evidence, whereupon he was thrown into prison. The figures are typical of work by the Leiden 'fijnschilders' (meaning ‘painters of high finish’).
