  • Boursse, from Amsterdam, specialised in courtyard scenes and domestic interiors, sometimes recalling the work of Pieter de Hooch. His figures, however, are more solemn, his tonality darker, and his technique generally rougher in texture.
The scene may represent a sickroom, because of the stillness and the prominence of the unmade bed. The painting may be one of two such subjects listed in the inventory of the artist’s brother in 1671. The directness of the image and the rough surface of the technique are typical of Boursse’s individual style, which anticipates nineteenth-century realist painting.
