  • The son of the artist Frans van Mieris, Willem studied with his father, whose artistic legacy he upheld and expanded. The majority of his works are genre scenes. Children’s Games belongs to the tradition of ‘niche’ pictures invented by Gerrit Dou, where figures are shown in a window space, in this case leaning on a ledge decorated with a bas-relief reminiscent of the work of the celebrated Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy (1594-1643). Here the children’s playthings anticipate their later roles in life.
