  • This painting is similar in composition, but superior in quality, to Dead Hare and Still Life (see P174). It belonged in the eighteenth century to Baron Schönborn, and hung in the Grossen Speiss-Saal (large dining room) at Schoss Gaibach in 1746. Unlike the other still lifes in the Collection with the same provenance (see P98, P124 and P140), the picture appears to have been missed by the 4th Marquess of Hertford at the Schönborn sale, where it was acquired by the comte de l’Espine for the modest price of 1,050 francs. Lord Hertford must have pursued it later, however, as it was listed in his inventory at the rue Lafitte in 1871.
