- This picture is a fine early work by Wijnants. The right side depicts a rugged track twisting round a sandy bank, with finely detailed vegetation in the foreground and figures on the road adding picturesque interest. The gnarled silhouette of the central tree and the shattered trunk on the road provide extra texture. Decorative and deliberately picturesque, such scenes made Wijnants a favourite model for eighteenth-century artists, such as Boucher and Gainsborough.
