  • The picture depicts the celebratory embarkation of Charles II for England. Charles had been living in exile in Holland, following the execution of his father and the rule of Cromwell and Parliament, but was invited to regain his throne in 1660. Taking his leave from Scheveningen, he boarded a specially decorated Dutch pink (a boat used for coastal shipping), seen centre-right flying a white flag with the English royal arms in gold. The event was recorded in drawings by van de Velde the Younger's father, the draftman Willem van de Velde the Elder. One of the latter’s drawings, today in Edinburgh, might have served as the basis for this picture. The painting seems to be a collaborative work, with many of the figures painted by Willem's brother, Adriaen Van de Velde.
