  • In this small-scale genre scene a woman holds a watch to her ear. Her right hand slips inside her jacket as if testing her heartbeat to the rhythm of the little clock. The lit candle in the back may symbolise the flame of desire, but it may also suggest that this picture is a vanitas, intended to remind the viewer of the transience of human life and love. The lady’s costume, with its elegant ermine-trimmed jacket, recalls the work of Gerard ter Borch.
