  • The son of a notary, Duyfhuysen studied in Haarlem before returning to his home town of Rotterdam, where he worked as a portraitist and painter of low-life genre scenes. His Rustic Courtship shows a characteristic peasant interior, which derives from those of Adriaen Brouwer and Adriaen van Ostade. A man makes a lewd gesture behind a pregnant girl, who clutches a flagon to her chest. A warning of the consequences of over-indulgence, the earthy behaviour of the laughing couple is contrasted with the spiritual demeanour of the young boy with a book, a figure also recognisable in several other paintings by the artist.
