  • The son of a German sculptor, Caspar Netscher moved to Arnhem and later studied under Gerard ter Borch in Deventer. He settled in The Hague, becoming a member of the painters’ society, Pictura, in 1662. During this period he specialised in small-scale genre scenes (of which The Lace Maker, also in the Wallace Collection, is the finest example). A Young Lady playing the Guitar depicts a fashionably dressed girl, seated at a table covered by a sumptuous rug. Holding a guitar, she shows off her musical accomplishments.
