  • In A Skating Scene Van der Neer makes use of a slightly raised vantage-point, from which he depicts a large expanse of sky. A sense of distance is created by the delicate silhouettes of trees and buildings traced against the horizon. Small figures, which recall the work of Hendrick Avercamp, animate the foreground and middle distance and provide picturesque interest: they chat, skate, ride in sleighs and play kolf.
