- Chiefly remembered for his Italianate landscapes, Du Jardin was described by his biographer as the ablest pupil of Nicolaes Berchem. He may have travelled to Italy early in his career, and he probably visited France in 1650. His small landscapes of the 1650s reveal a debt to Potter in their naturalism, combined with a bright palette and sensitive handling of light. His late landscapes are of a darker tonality, with much rougher brushwork. The Smithy is a characteristic Italianate genre scene displaying the subtle treatment of light and shade as well as bright local colours typical of Du Jardin’s work of the 1650s.
