- Scenes of buying and selling were popular subjects for artists and collectors in seventeenth-century Dutch art. They affirmed the key role played by commerce in a prosperous mercantile society. The handling of the paint and the fluidity of the technique suggest that the picture was painted during the artist’s early years in Amsterdam, from 1657 to c.1662.
