  • Son of Aert van der Neer (also represented in the Wallace Collection), Eglon studied first with his father, and later with the history painter Jacob van Loo. He was in France c.1654, but returned to Holland, and by 1664 was living in Rotterdam, where he remained until 1679. During this period, he developed his characteristic refined genre scenes, which recall the Leiden ‘fine painters’ in technique and ter Borch in subject matter. Van der Neer painted a number of pictures with elegant female figures occupied in polite occupations, such as reading and playing musical instruments. They show exemplary feminine behaviour among the leisured classes. This young woman draws from bronze statuettes based on ancient sculpture.
